Gender pay gap is a pressing issue that has plagued some of the biggest industries including business, tech and even Hollywood. Even today, this wage disparity affects some of the biggest female superstars in the entertainment business.
Disney’s Jungle Cruise is the latest proof of this unsettling culture where The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) was paid over $13 million more than his female co-star Emily Blunt. This was despite the fact that both actors had equal roles in the film.
Unsettling Wage Gap
TMZ became the first to break this shocking news. The report revealed that the 46-year-old acting powerhouse took home $22 million for his lead role.
In comparison, Blunt, 35, was only offered $9 for portraying the leading female character of Lily. This means that Johnson was paid more than double the amount his female co-star received.
This recent case in point proves that pay disparity is a glaring problem in the entertainment industry that could possibly take another 100 years to bridle. Disney has been contacted by multiple news channels, but it has yet to comment on the issue. Dwyane Johnson’s representatives haven’t made an official statement either.
Dwayne Johnson is currently one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Forbes revealed in August that he earned over $124 million in 2018, almost twice as much as he made in 2017.
He also earned the 5th spot of Forbes’ list of the 100 highest paid entertainers in the industry. He also claimed the runner-up spot on the list of highest paid actors this year, thanks to the back-to-back hits he delivered his year.
Highest Paid Actor
The wrestler-turned-actor was also named the highest-earning entertainer in 2007 after he was paid a whopping $5.5 million for his lead role in The Scorpion King. Johnson is also loved by action fans around the world for his over-the-top stunts and great sense of humor.
He has even a number of popularity awards including People’s Choice, Teen Choice and Kids Choice. In honor of his status as a box-office powerhouse, Johnson also earned his own star on Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.
Actress Emily Blunt has earned her own fair share of prestigious awards including the coveted Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critic’s Choice. She is also nominated in Oscars 2019 for the best actress category for her lead role in Mary Poppins Returns.
Blunt made her Hollywood debut when she was only 18 with a role in The Royal Family. Since then she’s amassed an impressive number of award-winning films including Edge of Tomorrow, Devil Wears Prada and A Quiet Place.
Now her new film opposite Dwayne Johnson is set to release in July 24, 2020, pushed back from its original date, October 11, 2019.
